Mapping

The Tactical Mapping tool equips activists to collaboratively expand their understanding of relationships and develop strategic and effective action. By diagramming the relationships that surround human rights abuses we can see an interactive overview of where we are and the pathway toward change.

IDENTIFY A PROBLEM

Human rights problems are often large and complex, while the resources to address them are limited. So it’s important to take time to know yourself, prioritize and focus your energy on a specific aspect of the problem where you can build momentum and make an impact.

CREATE PROBLEM STATEMENT

Defining a problem statement, as clearly as possible, allows you to understand the issue you want to address from a rights based approach. This ensures you and your team are focused and working toward a common human rights based objective.

CONNECTION DIAGRAM

It is critical to expand the knowledge of yourself and your opponents regarding the network of human relationships surrounding your issue. Mapping these relationships allows you to identify opportunities for taking action. The Tactical Map allows you to understand the ripple effects of action, whether local or international. You will be better able to engage your allies, prepare for your opponents and identify tactics based on your capacity.

Spectrum of Allies

When assessing the terrain of human relationships, it is important to understand the people, groups and institutions working both for and against change. The Spectrum of Allies helps us to better understand how individuals and groups may respond to our actions based on a range of allies to opponents. Shifting actors, even slightly, across the spectrum can shift the balance of your issue.
